About JuiceTab

The yellow EnergyGuide label on a new appliance estimates what it costs to run using one national electricity price. Electricity prices are not national — they vary by a factor of three across the states. So the label is close to right in some places and badly wrong in others, and it is the number most people use when comparing appliances.

This site does the same arithmetic with your state's actual price, for 13,333 models: refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, room air conditioners and water heaters.

Where the numbers come from

Energy figures come from two public databases: the EPA's ENERGY STAR certified product database, refreshed weekly, and the U.S. Department of Energy's compliance certification database, refreshed fortnightly — which covers every model on sale, not only the efficient ones. Electricity prices come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, refreshed monthly. Each model's page says which database its figure came from. The methodology page spells out every assumption, including the ones we refuse to make.

How the site makes money

Links to retailers may earn a commission, and the site may carry advertising. Neither affects which models appear or what the numbers say: rankings are energy use, ascending or descending, with no paid placement and no editorial thumb on the scale.

Independence

Estimates based on public EPA, U.S. DOE and U.S. EIA data. Your actual bill depends on your utility's rates and how you use the appliance. Independent site — not affiliated with or endorsed by the EPA, DOE, or ENERGY STAR.
